This year, some familiar names have quietly dimmed their lights. I noticed Serene Sanctuary, with its gentle Hatha classes, closed its doors. It was a lovely spot, but perhaps a little too serene for the current energy. And the bright, airy Breath of Bliss studio, which focused on very specific transformational breathwork, also didn't make it through the year. It's a shame, as their cacao ceremony was truly special, with notes of dark chocolate and a hint of chili. But sometimes, the market just isn't ready for such intense focus.

On the flip side, we've seen some exciting new energy. 'Murni Yoga & Pranayama' opened its doors near the Campuhan Ridge, and it’s a breath of fresh air, literally. Their focus is deeply traditional, with teachers like Ibu Ketut guiding us through pranayama sequences that truly feel ancient. The studio itself is simple, a beautiful open-air bale overlooking a small river, smelling of fresh ginger and frangipani. The mats are thick, the props well-maintained, and the classes are challenging but deeply rewarding. You won't find flashy marketing here, just serious practice. Drop-in rates are on par with established studios, reflecting the quality of instruction. This is for those who want to truly understand the mechanics of breath, not just 'feel good.'

Then there's 'The Oasis Collective,' which feels like it's selling an entire lifestyle, not just a class. It’s a sprawling space with a juice bar serving vibrant concoctions of dragon fruit and lime, a boutique, and several studios. Their 'Flow & Flourish' yoga classes are popular, set to a curated playlist, and the instructors are undeniably charismatic. The space is stunning, all polished concrete and lush greenery, perfect for those Instagram moments. However, I found the actual yoga practice a little… diluted. It’s beautiful to watch, but the depth isn't quite there for me. It feels more like a gentle stretch and a social event. If you want a lovely morning out with friends and a beautiful smoothie, it’s perfect. If you're seeking profound self-inquiry, perhaps look elsewhere.

Another interesting newcomer is 'Saraswati Sound & Breath.' This smaller studio, tucked away off a quieter jalan, focuses on sound healing combined with gentle breathwork. Their sessions often involve Tibetan singing bowls and gongs, creating vibrations that hum through your chest like a deep, resonant gamelan. The breathwork here is less about intense release and more about gentle, guided relaxation. It’s a wonderful antidote to a busy day, leaving you feeling calm and centred, like sipping a warm cup of jahe tea. The teachers here are incredibly intuitive, guiding you with soft voices and a knowing presence. Drop-in prices are a little higher, reflecting the specialized nature of the sound instruments and the intimate class sizes.

What I’ve observed this year is a clear bifurcation. There are the studios, like Murni and Saraswati, that are digging deeper into the roots of these ancient practices, offering authentic, sometimes challenging, paths to wellness. Their focus is on the internal experience, the quality of the breath, the stillness of the mind. Then there are the others, like The Oasis Collective, which cater to a broader audience, blending wellness with luxury and social connection. There's nothing inherently wrong with either, but it's important to know what you're seeking.

For me, the true magic of Ubud's wellness scene still lies in those places that honor the tradition, that smell of incense and fresh offerings, and where the teachers speak from a place of deep wisdom.
